This is the spot to view my current works in progress.
If I am working on a commission for you, my might see some in progress shots here.
If not you can see some of the other stuff I am working on.
Mansions of Madness Miniatures
I am finely getting to posting some of my work in progress figs for the board game Mansions of Madness. All these are at different levels of completion. I had a bit of a problem with some of my lights but I wanted to share the pictures anyway. I’m hoping to have it sorted out soon, but have a gander at these for now.
Tick Tock - The clock is almost started.
The clock is ticking.. I start at midnight… Can you feel the nerves? The angles shifting…
Off the radar for a while, but I'm back
Sorry everyone I dropped off the radar for a bit due to a fun month of spending money. Ha Ha not really. There was a ton of money going out during june including the unplanned purchase of a new car… bummer… but lets take a look at what I have been working on anyway.
Those of you that follow me know that I took Sergio’s class in May (if you don’t know, scroll down lol) and I have be practicing his unique method of painting for the month and I really like it. I’m not very good at it but I think I have potential. To celebrate this I purchased a couple of miniatures from his kickstarter (see money flowing out last month), on of each one actually. Here is the first one that I have started working on. Im pretty satisfied with the way he is turning out so far with the exception of his metallic armbands. NMM — I suck at that.
Next up is the “Ruler of Hell” from reaper black — the new line of bones miniatures. They are a little stiffer than bones and hold their detail really well. The price is right. I haven’t decided if this guy will go to reapercon with me or not.
Lastly, is this one. She is going to be one of my ReaperCon entires but she has a log way to go first. I have a rug I want to put on half of the floor with some cats on the rug looking at the bottle they just tipped over. I have sculpted the rug but not painted it yet. The plan is to paint the two cats to match our two missing cats, Fluffy and Climber. We will find out if I am that good in a few weeks I guess. They may just turn out to be generic cats lol
And then there is this guy...
Sergio Calvo — One of the most coolest people I have taken a class from. He is the F@cking Master!!! not only was he an awesome teacher, but he really funny and cool. Oh and did I mention he was a Crystal Brush winner? Multiple times? No? Well he is F@cking Master!!! :)
This the Miniature were painted in the class.
The class was epic! I learned to use an airbrush differently than I have have before. I normally used it for priming and base coats at higher pressures… but now… WOW. We learned to use it as more of a finishing tool by lowering the pressure and glazing at the end. So cool. Am I gushing? Well I’m a fanboy now….. Special shout out to Tiffany for being my lab partner (as well as the rest of the class for putting up with my old guy moves — no not farting! That was someone else)
Two things must yee know about....
The old painterman. First there is ReaperCon and work has begun in earnest. Who is earnest? I don’t know but work has started and that is the important part. I like the way this efreeti is turning out but there is still quite a lot of work to do on her. The smoke needs some more definition and I really don’t like the face in the armor covering her midsection. Also I thinking the horns have to go and the cloth needs a design with skin tattoos to complement the design. And… well you get the idea. Below are some Work in Progress shots for your amuzement. Feel free to offer constructive criticism.
And the other thing yee must know about the old painterman is this…
Yep — I won a Miniature Monthly Golden Gnome in the open competition at Kingdom Con this year. Goldy is taken up a spot in my display case next to my entry (Krampus) and the two have become thick as thieves. I couldn’t be more surprised and happy. Thank you Miniature Monthly for making contest happen again in such an awesome way.
I'm done with him or is he done with me?
Krampus! I know right!??! I think I am done with him. He is pretty much finished and ready for Kingdom Con this weekend. I may need to spice up the tongue a bit but I haven’t decided yet. The plan is to enter it into the Miniature Monthly contest and see what happens.
ReaperCon testing has begun...... sort of
So those of you who know that ReaperCon is my favorite convention, know that I try to start early to so I am prepared without having to scramble at the last minute. Those same people also know that I fail every year to accomplish this goal. This year appears to be <drum roll> no different.
So here are some pictures of what I am working on currently, some of which may be entries. I don’t know yet. First off is a test — only a test — of the Reaper Efreeti system. This wonderful sculpt is part of the new Bones Black line, although I did modify her slightly. I’m trying out the color scheme on my “Practice” version first, then I will move on the actual piece if I like the result. Feel free to tell me what you think. I’m always open to feedback.
Next up is a wolf shaman that I am messing around with. I have an idea for him which is still evolving but it looks to me like he is shooting some sort of spell from his his hand. I see him running across a moss covered log, ready to jump off the end, but I am not fixated on that.
This is a scale75 piece that I have been working on for fun. She might be going this year or not. Depends on how much I like the way she comes on. Also she is a 75mm figure so that gives me more room to play around.
Lastly a Reaper Bones Black Rock Troll. Not much to say with this guy except he is a little farther along than the last time you saw him.
Still more animal crackers (not in the soup though)
So I trying to get inspired for Reapercon 2019, but I havent yet. Inspired isn’t the right word because I very excited for it — so excited I’ve peed myself while I’m typing this — but I haven’t settle on a piece to paint for it yet. Some of my friends are already working on their entries which are very cool. You know who your are…. (Jessi) so I’m trying to get started. Its harder than I thought…
So in the mean time I will paint other stuff, namely the stuff below. When I saw the duck warrior I wanted, nay, I needed to paint one. Anyone ever played RuneQuest? In the world of Glorantha ducks have been cursed with intelligence so must follow the ways of other intelligent life. Its great! Elves are considered vegetables by the trolls (another player race) who consider themselves veterinarians.
Also there are two elephant totems and one of the new Bones Black rock trolls. One of the elephants is a give for some one (shhhhh don’t tell them) and the other is just a fun experiment. The rock Troll is just a diversion from other stuff and a test of the bones black material. Anyway, comment if you want and enjoy.
Animal crackers
Hi everyone,
Just a quick update to show you what I have been up to. I got these animals from Reaper Miniatures (in the Bones series) and they looked fun to paint. I just wanted to get them quickly on the table so I didn’t spend much time on them.
Krampus! Krampus is here!!!
Im considerig this guy a work in progress even though I am done with him for now. I sculpeted the letters out of green stuff and painted them separately. That was a bit of a PITA, but I learned a better way to do it for next time. Trying to decide if I should make some blood draining down the front from under the letters. Not sure yet. What do you think? There are also of a couple of places I want to “fix” because I don’t like them but then I may have been looking at him for too long.
Well this has been a long time coming...
So because of work and vacation and well everything I took some time off painting for a while. I back at with this guy. He is a bust of Krampus form the fine folks at Creature Caster miniatures. I wanted to do something seasonal for the holidays but I was late finishing him up. He is still not finished but I like the way he is turning out. I want to “lighten” the tips of the horns a bit to get them some interest — maybe add some deep brown in areas? Also I need to do the skulls and the bits of his necklaces to make them all shinny and stuff.
Also been working on this guy. I gave one a way as part of Christmas exchange but I liked the miniature so much that I got myself a copy. This is my copy. Too bad I didn’t take any pictures of the one that I sent off but oh well. Enjoy.
So... What have I been working on?
Well I will tell you… I bought this Reaper Bones figure (Avatar of Rage) at ReaperCon with the idea of painting him while I was there. So I didn’t do it — Didnt ever start it — Because friends and Alcohol that is why. When I got home I finished my Miniature Monthly entry and started on this little guy. I didn’t like the grass skirt he was wearing so I greenstuffed a cloth one for him. The OSL was something I wanted to try with some of the newer florescent colors I got from Green Stuff World and I’m not happy with it. Its way too heavy handed but I like the rest of the paint job.
Also I’ve been working on this years ReaperCon Sophie. I wanted to divert from the “box art” and move toward an olive skin tone. He clothes, wings and armor are from the purple and reds area with yellows as the contrasting color. Not that I see them next to each other the skirt from the hippo above and the colors on Sophie are both from the same area of the color wheel. I might be spending too much time there so I will have to switch it up in the next few figs I paint
Moving on to a reaper gnoll. Well crud I’m still in the same area on the wheel. I was going to paint something on the back of his ragidy clock but considering the above color choices I think I’ll just move on.
Last and most funnily is Neopolork from Scale 75. I picked this guy up at the con and thought I would start him right away. I’ve been into busts lately. Not those type of busts, these type of busts. I’ve always been into those type of busts
Bonus content — I show you this one because this is the same color palette as most of the others above. Sigh. I started this one a while back and and headed down the same color road. It a well worn path at this point. Next time I will switch colors I promise. I’ll do a random draw for colors and work from there. In the mean time, I have to say that I really like this bust from Scale75.
And then this happened....
Right on the heels of ReaperCon 2018!
No one was more surprised than me. I only had one day to finish this guy up after ReaperCon… I was suppose to finish him at con but well there was drinking and friends to catch up with. I actually had two entries but I abandoned the creature caster one because I was not going to be able to finish and spent my remaining time on this guy. A one point I just decided that it was time to stop working on him because I was flat out of time. There are lots more finishing that I want to do to him. I won a copy of Rail Raiders Infinite (the game that he goes to) which I can’t wait to paint up and play.
Many thanks to Miniature Monthly for all the hard work in putting together this massive contest.
ReaperCon 2018! GOLD!!! Finely a GOLD!!!!
Back from ReaperCon 2018 and I AM SO HAPPY! I won a gold this year! I have been trying to do this for a while… but I am getting ahead of myself. Here is my bronze entry in the painters division. I call him Admiral Bob because you have to have at least one Bob figure in your entries. No really. Its a rule… Okay its my rule but hey its a rule. This is my first bust I’ve done for a competition or ever in fact.
Moving on… This is my silver entry and it was in the diorama category called “Midnight Cheese Raider”. I used the parts from a real mousetrap which I shortened to make it fit the figure a bit better. I liked the idea of it being a cross between Raiders of the Lost Ark and Tomb Raider but the problem was that I didn’t have a way conveying why she was in the trap. Finely I came up with the idea that she could be taking a “Golden” (aka cheese) idol like the beginning of Raiders. This idea evolved very quickly in my mind and I started after my gold entry and finished it before my gold entry. The “base” was pretty much my wife’s idea (thanks honey-bunches) and I finished it literally in the hotel room the night before it was due.
Lastly is my Gold entry. Did I say gold I meant GGGOOOLLLDDD! I case you haven’t picked up on it I am very happy with this outcome. This idea evolved over the course of about 3 months. Some of you may remember this figure had wings and a sword at one time and it was an angel with a sword. Well I turned this bad-boy dark. I removed his wings and give him a skull staff with a swarm of skulls screaming around.
ReaperCon and other shows
This is one of my ReaperCon entries this year. It still needs a lot of work but I feel like its getting there. It looked much different in my head that in reality but I'm not unhappy with the reality. I need to figure out a way of brightening up the main body of the figure without overshadowing the screaming skulls. Of course it could be that I don't have the wings on, but I'm kind of starting to like it without the wings. I'll have to post some pics with the wings on before I decide which way to go.
Next up is a WIP for the Miniature Monthly contest -- actually the next two are, but this one is huge. Its Lady of Arcana from Creature Caster miniatures. This are large, highly detailed, sculpts of some of the most outlandish creates I have ever seen -- in the same vein as Kingdom Death.
Lastly is a Kingsman miniature from Ninja Division. Something about this figure caught my eye even though I'm not really a Chibi/Anime fan. Not that I dislike it but I'm just not a huge fan. These are pretty fun to paint though so I may pick up some more if I get a chance. This one is painted just like the box art because that is what drew me to it and it relieved me from having to think about colors too much. Plus, I like the challenge of trying to make the figure match the reference art.
WWMD Hour 23 of 24
home stretch. Only 50 minutes left:). Yeah I know I said bluish green but l like the deep red better
